Bucketly Community Rules
🎯 What is a Bucket List Item?
A bucket list item is a goal, experience, or achievement that you want to accomplish in your lifetime. On Bucketly, we aim to create a comprehensive and inspiring collection of bucket list items. To maintain quality and consistency, please follow these guidelines:
What makes a good bucket list item:
- Specific and actionable: Good bucket list items are clear and actionable. For example, "Climb Mount Kilimanjaro" is specific and understandable. "Visit Africa" is also acceptable as a broader goal.
- Achievable: While bucket list items can be ambitious, they should be theoretically achievable by most people given enough time, resources, or determination.
- Meaningful: Bucket list items should represent significant experiences or achievements that bring personal fulfillment or growth. What is meaningful varies by person – both challenging goals like "Climb Mount Everest" and simpler ones like "Walk 1000 steps on a single day" are valid.
- Unique: Items that represent unique experiences or achievements are encouraged. However, common dreams and goals are also welcome.
What is NOT a Bucket List Item:
- Daily tasks: Regular activities like "Go grocery shopping" or "Clean the house" are not bucket list items.
- Vague goals: Overly general statements like "Be happy" or "Travel more" lack the specificity needed for a bucket list item.
- Illegal or harmful activities: Any activities that involve breaking laws, harming others, or promoting dangerous behavior are prohibited.
- Offensive content: Items that are discriminatory, hateful, or offensive to any group or individual are not allowed.
- Prohibited content: We do not allow items related to sexual content, violence, gore, drug use, or divisive religious or political topics. If you believe an exception should be made, please submit your item for moderator review. To report existing items that violate these guidelines, please report them.
📝 Title and Description Guidelines
Title formatting:
- Use proper casing:
- Common actions/places: lowercase (e.g., "Cross desert by camel")
- Official names: proper case (e.g., "Visit Dancing House")
- You may use non-English characters (accented characters) in titles
- Example: "Visit Kandahār" is acceptable
- Descriptions can also use accented characters
- Note: Tags cannot use accents - use "#kandahar" not "#kandahār"
Description best practices:
- Keep descriptions concise but informative (1-2 sentences)
- Include relevant context about why the item is bucket list-worthy
- Avoid overly promotional language
- Do not include URLs or contact information
🏷️ Categories and Tags
Categories:
- Each bucket list item must have one (exactly one) category
- Choose from the existing categories that best represent your item
Tags:
- Use relevant tags to help others discover your bucket list item
- Avoid overly specific or encyclopedic tags
- Use popularity-based reasoning when selecting tags
- Keep tags concise and relevant to the item
🌍 Flag Codes
- Use the appropriate country or region flag for location-specific bucket list items
- For countries, use the standard two-letter country code

💡 Additional Guidelines
-
Subjective achievements: Some goals are subjective to obtain (e.g., "Learn to play guitar"). These goals are okay, but it's up to you to decide when you've achieved it.
-
Specificity levels: You can be as general or specific as you like:
- General: "Start running"
- More specific: "Run 5 km"
- Very specific: "Run 5 km under 19 minutes"
All are valid bucket list items.
-
Location specificity: Similarly, you can vary location specificity:
- General: "See the Northern Lights"
- More specific: "See the Northern Lights in Finland"
- Very specific: "See the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland"
-
Dates and years: Do not include dates/years in titles unless referring to specific events:
- Not recommended: "Visit Eiffel Tower in 2025"
- Acceptable: "Attend 2025 Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco" or "Visit Twin Peaks in February 24"
-
Don't worry about perfection: If you're unsure about your submission, create it anyway. Our moderators will help improve it if needed.
